The Moscow City Teachers’ Training University was founded in March, 1995. Today, the University has been educating teachers for School of the Future. It is provided with all basic indicators: teaching material resources, personnel structure of professors, quality of teaching and educational and research process, an assessment of graduates working in educational institutions. The high school has been created by the Government of Moscow during the critical moment for a domestic education - an acute shortage of teachers and other educational personnel in the Russian capital.

The University Founder is the Department of Education of the city of Moscow.

The University’s Head is the Rector – Doctor of historical sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian academy of natural sciences Ryabov Victor Vasilyevich.

The University pursues all its activities on the basis of the Concept of the University Development, created in 1996 and constantly updated, which has the complex character covering basic directions of work taking into account main features of a professional training in the capital megacity.

In the course of nearly 15 years of its activity, the Moscow City Teachers’ Training University has turned to the centre of science, education and culture of Moscow with powerful teaching resources, modern information-technological possibilities.

Now the contingent of students makes out 17 thousand persons, 2/3 of them studying full-time. The University embraces 6 Institutes, 23 Departments and a College.

Preparation of teaching experts is being conducted on 38 programs of Higher professional education (23 of which are aimed at teachers education) and on 2 programs of Middle professional education.

At the University there are 35 postgraduate and 8 doctoral programs, where 800 persons are being educated. The University’s Dissertational councils consider doctor's and master's theses.

Annually about one thousand teachers graduate from the University, more than 75 % of them are working in various educational institutions of Moscow. During all those years the University has prepared about 11 thousand teachers for Russia’s capital. There have never been any complaints concerning the educational level of our graduates.

The Scientific and pedagogical potential of the University is being constantly used to steadily develop and modernize education in Moscow.

Due to the Concept of the University Development, the University created the Scientific Research Institute of Capital Education (NIISO). Since 1998, it is a centre uniting scientific resources with real possibilities and requirements of the modern educational system. Now there are 21 laboratories in its structure, their employees - doctors and candidates of sciences - carry out fundamental and applied researches in priority directions in order to further develop the educational system in Moscow.

On the basis of the University, the University Scientific-Educational District has emerged embracing more than 60 educational institutions (from a kindergarten to a high school). The District has been elaborating upon a model of a continuous pedagogical education, and it supports a network of pedagogical and preschool classes in more than 200 base schools, gymnasiums, lycees. There are 12 experimental city platforms aimed at working on essential problems of Pedagogics, Psychology, Education and Vacational Training.

In 2006, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation has issued its certificate to the University which ensures that the level and quality of education, retraining and improvement of professional skills at the University meet the requirements for the inclusion of the University into the Register of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation. The certificate is signed by the Academician, the President of the Chamber E.M. Primakov.

The University is represented in the Fund of Supporting the Russian teachers, as well as at the Union of Rectors of the Russian Federation, in the Presidium of the Council of University Rectors of Moscow and Moscow Region, at the State Duma Economic Council, the Interdepartmental council on awards of the Government of the Russian Federation in the spheres of education, at the competition Grand jury «Teacher of the Year of Russia», «The Pedagogical debut», in the Main board of the All-Russia pedagogical meeting, the Russian public commission «Leaders of Education of Russia», in the Public educational chamber of Moscow, the Advisory council of the Audit Chamber of Moscow.

Being one of the leading teachers’ training high schools of Russia, the University makes a considerable contribution to the development of the educational system of the country. Based on the results of ratings of last years, developed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the University is included into five the very best teachers’ training universities, and it is awarded the «Gold medal of the European quality» by the council of Committees of education and science of the State Duma, the Federation Council and the Union of Rectors of Russia.

For successes in educating of teaching experts, the University was repeatedly awarded the Diplomas of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Gold medals of the All-Russia Exhibition Centre (VVC).

In 2006, among few high schools the MGPU has won the Grant of the National Fund of Professional Education in the field of information-communicative technologies.
